Jon Jones failed a drug test in relation to his UFC 214 title fight with Daniel Cormier on July 29, it was confirmed Tuesday by the UFC.
On Tuesday evening, Jones’ manager Malki Kawa and his camp provided a statement to MMA Fighting. The statement said Jones’ samples will be re-tested for validity or to see if it came from anything tainted.
The full statement is below:
We are all at a complete loss for words right now. Jon, his trainers, his nutritionists and his entire camp have worked tirelessly and meticulously the past 12 months to avoid this exact situation. We are having the samples tested again to determine the validity or source of contamination. Jon is crushed by this news and we are doing whatever we can as a team, to support him.
Jones defeated Cormier by third-round TKO in the main event of UFC 214 on July 29 in Anaheim, Calif., to win the UFC light heavyweight title. It’s unclear if the belt will be stripped. The result of that fight could be overturned, pending the adjudication process by both USADA and the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC).
